Bodrum is a great region to both live and holiday with its unique nature and wonderful climate. However, especially when evaluated in terms of childhood allergies and asthma, the rich nature and geographical features of Bodrum can create great difficulties for allergic children. In line with my specialization thesis and clinical experience on allergy and asthma, I would like to share with you the tips for minimizing children's allergies in our region.
ALLERGY TRIGGERS SPECIFIC TO BODRUM:
1. HIGH HUMIDITY AND HOUSE DUST MITES (MITE): The Aegean coasts have high humidity levels throughout the year, especially in winter and spring. 'House Dust Mites' (Mites), which love areas where humidity exceeds 50%, find the perfect ground to breed in carpets, plush toys and bed linens. - Solution Suggestion: Ventilate your home frequently, wash bed linens at 60 degrees once a week, and minimize the use of thick carpets and exposed plush toys, especially in the rooms of allergic children.
2. PINE FORESTS AND RICH POLLEN LOAD: Surrounded by olive trees, pine forests, bougainvilleas and wild grasses, Bodrum has a very high "pollen load" suspended in the air during the spring months. This aggravates hay fever (allergic rhinitis) symptoms and triggers asthma attacks. - Solution Suggestion: Avoid keeping windows open for long periods of time in the early morning hours when pollen levels are highest. In windy weather, limit the time your child spends outside or have him wear sunglasses and a mask.
3. DAMP AND MOLD FUNGUS: Air conditioning pipes, basement-style storage areas, or poorly ventilated corners of stone houses can produce mold. The silent and number one cause of night-time coughs in children is usually indoor mold.
WHEN DO ASTHMA AND ALLERGY CRISIS REQUIRE CONSULTATION TO A DOCTOR?
Symptoms of asthma and allergic diseases often start like a common cold, but the following are danger signs and require urgent examination: - If your child has a choking and feverish cough, especially at night or in the morning (sometimes leading to vomiting). - After exertion (while playing, running), if he/she becomes congested much earlier than his/her peers and his/her breath becomes wheezing. - If there is constant mouth breathing due to nasal congestion and problems such as snoring, postnasal drip and insomnia. - If the allergic reaction causes rashes on the body, severe itching and stinging in the eyes, and most dangerously, swelling in the throat or severe shortness of breath.
YOUR EXPERT ALLERGY / ASTHMA DOCTOR IN BODRUM Do not waste time on such persistent cough and wheezing complaints that seem ordinary but steal your child's sleep, development and energy to a great extent. With regular monitoring, correct respiratory treatment, correct use of inhaler medications (fis-fiss) and environmental control, asthma can be controlled and our children can continue their sports and normal social lives. In our clinic, we mobilize our knowledge on child allergies to help families breathe easy, taking into account the natural conditions of Bodrum.
